How to check your cosmetic batch code

1. Locate the batch code on your product. Most cosmetics have a 4-7 character alphanumeric code printed or embossed on the bottom of the bottle, the crimp of a tube, or near the barcode. SK-II uses 5 characters (e.g. RDB1A); Shiseido uses 4 (e.g. 8211); Lancome uses 4-5 (e.g. 40D101).
2. Select your brand from the dropdown above to use the correct decoder algorithm. Each brand encodes manufacture date differently.
3. Enter the batch code exactly as printed — case insensitive, no spaces, no dashes.
4. Read the result: the tool displays the manufacture date, country of origin (where applicable), and an estimated unopened expiry window (typically 30-36 months). For Period After Opening (PAO), refer to the symbol on the packaging.

Why batch code verification matters

Cosmetic shelf life is regulated globally. The EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009 mandates a Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on products with a shelf life over 30 months. Japan's PMDA requires manufacture-date traceability via batch codes for all imported cosmetics. Australia's TGA enforces ARTG listing for sunscreens (SPF claims). Most unopened cosmetics maintain efficacy for 30-36 months from manufacture; once opened, the PAO icon (e.g. 12M, 24M) sets the in-use safety window.
