Cosmetic Batch Code Checker & Expiry Decoder
Instant cosmetic calculator to verify the production date, shelf life, and freshness of your beauty products. Supports top global brands including Shiseido, Estée Lauder, La Mer, SK-II, Decorté, Shu Uemura, Kiehl's, and 100+ more.
How to check your cosmetic batch code
-
Locate the batch code on your product. Most cosmetics have a 4-7 character alphanumeric code printed or embossed on the bottom of the bottle, the crimp of a tube, or near the barcode. SK-II uses 5 characters (e.g.
RDB1A); Shiseido uses 4 (e.g.8211); Lancome uses 4-5 (e.g.40D101). - Select your brand from the dropdown above to use the correct decoder algorithm. Each brand encodes manufacture date differently.
- Enter the batch code exactly as printed — case insensitive, no spaces, no dashes.
- Read the result: the tool displays the manufacture date, country of origin (where applicable), and an estimated unopened expiry window (typically 30-36 months). For Period After Opening (PAO), refer to the symbol on the packaging.

Why batch code verification matters
Cosmetic shelf life is regulated globally. The EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009 mandates a Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on products with a shelf life over 30 months. Japan's PMDA requires manufacture-date traceability via batch codes for all imported cosmetics. Australia's TGA enforces ARTG listing for sunscreens (SPF claims). Most unopened cosmetics maintain efficacy for 30-36 months from manufacture; once opened, the PAO icon (e.g. 12M, 24M) sets the in-use safety window.
Verifying the batch code before purchase or use protects you from expired stock (common at discount retailers and unauthorised resellers), counterfeit products (fake codes often do not decode to a valid date), and grey-market products shipped under different regulatory frameworks. NANA MALL's 100% Authenticity Guarantee includes batch-code verification on every shipment — every product we ship has a manufacture date within the last 18 months unless explicitly listed otherwise.
How to Check Your Cosmetic Batch Code
1. Find the Code
Locate the batch code printed or stamped on the bottom of the bottle, the side of the jar, or the crimp of the tube. It is usually 3-10 characters long (e.g., A43, 40X301, 2FFQGN).
2. Distinguish from Barcode
Do not confuse the batch code with the EAN/UPC barcode (13 digits). The batch code is short and often looks like a "stamp" or dot-matrix print.
3. Decode instantly
Select the brand name from the calculator above (e.g., Shiseido, Aesop, Sisley, Caudalie), enter the code, and click "Check Now" to see the manufacturing date.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the shelf life of unopened Japanese skincare?
Japanese law requires expiration dates only for products stable for less than 3 years. Most unopened brands like Shiseido, HABA, and Curel are good for at least 3 years from the batch production date.
How do I read Swisse or Australian supplement batch codes?
Australian TGA regulations usually require a clear "Expiry Date" (EXP) on the packaging. The batch code helps track the production line but the expiration is explicitly stated on brands like Swisse, Blackmores, and Life Space.
What does the "Open Jar" symbol mean?
This is the PAO (Period After Opening) symbol. If it says 12M, you should use the product within 12 months after opening, regardless of the manufacturing date.
